Garmin GPS device FM transmitter for Nuvi 360 or Nuvi 660

14 Sep 2008 | by Barton

What will the FM transmitter do for me in Garmin GPS device? Considering Nuvi 360 or Nuvi 660. The latter has an FM transmitter as well as bigger screen size. Anyone have experience with either of these? What will the FM transmitter give me in the 660? Is it worth the extra $100+?

You can use it as mentioned above but it functions the same way an FM transmitter would for an iPod. Your GPS has MP3 capabilities and instead of playing them through the crappy speaker of your GPS the transmitter always you to transmit your MP3s through an FM station to your radio. An FM transmitter can get over this problem by acting as a tiny FM radio station where you broadcast your music from the GPS to your car stereo. You set the FM frequency on the device and then tune your car stereo into that channel to listen to your MP3s. The success of it is hit or miss. In some areas there are so many radio stations that finding a “free” frequency to broadcast over can be challenging. If you have an iPod and you can buy a transmitter for it for $25 from Amazon.

The transmitter will allow you to hear the directions from your car stereo by using an FM channel. It’s actually a nice feature, because it’s less install and wires. Unless the first, cheaper one has a good internal speaker.

I believe one of the main purposes of the FM transmitter is to allow the Garmin Nuvi 660 to broadcast to your FM radio instead of using its built in speaker. This is presuming that your FM radio sound will be louder and clearer. You have to decide if that is worth an extra $100.
