GPS no signal problem

9 Jun 2009 | by Fleta

GPS no signal or it take GPS time to find a signal, these are two major problems when we use GPS device. Many factors will affect GPS receivers to receive satellite signals. some barriers or parking deck will interrupt GPS to start receiving a signal. like:
Method (code) to identify each satellite.
The location of the satellite or some information on how to determine it.
Information regarding the amount of time elapsed since the signal left the satellite.
Details on the satellite clock status, etc.

Most GPS receivers allow you to set up a margin of error which they refer to as HDOP and VDOP. HDOP stands for Horizontal Dilution of Precision and VDOP stands for Vertical Dilution of Precision.By setting these values higher you will likely get a better time to first fix but have a little less accuracy. You can also try turning off WAAS or SBAS if your device supports it but again expect your precision to go down some.

All GPS receivers need a clear path to the satellites and buildings or parking structures will block the signals. Most devices will have a screen that shows the location of the satellites above you and this helps determine where signals are coming from. If the parking deck is open on the sides, parking on a side that has less obstructions to the satellites may allow the signals to reach your GPS faster.
